Pune Ring Road Eastern Extension Approved

Pune's long-awaited Ring Road project just moved several steps closer to reality. The Maharashtra Cabinet's Infrastructure Committee, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has approved the eastern extension of the Pune Ring Road at a revised project cost of ₹10,502.36 crore. The decision was taken at a meeting also attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, along with ministers Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Shivendraraje Bhosale and Uday Samant.

The approved stretch runs for roughly 33.8 km, connecting Sortapwadi on the Pune-Solapur Road to Varve-Shivare on the Pune-Satara Road. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will execute the project, which is planned for completion by June 2029. This eastern leg is part of the larger 168.89 km Pune Ring Road, and once the full loop is connected, inter-state and long-distance traffic travelling across different parts of the state will finally be able to bypass Pune city altogether.

Engineering-wise, this isn't a simple widening job. The corridor will feature one major traffic interchange, three major bridges, five minor bridges, 18 elevated road sections or flyovers, and four tunnels. Officials have also planned tree plantation along both sides of the alignment, with landscaping and beautification work concentrated near the interchange. The controlled-access expressway is designed for a speed of 120 kmph, which puts it in the same league as Pune's newer expressway-grade infrastructure.

Land acquisition, often the biggest bottleneck for road projects in Maharashtra, is already well underway. About 80 per cent of the land required for this stretch has been acquired, which is a strong signal that construction could begin on schedule rather than getting stuck in litigation or compensation disputes for years, as has happened with several other ring road segments across the state.

For homebuyers and investors, the significance goes beyond just easier commutes. Ring roads of this scale typically trigger a wave of residential and logistics development around their interchanges and access points, simply because land along a controlled-access corridor becomes dramatically more connected almost overnight. Pune's eastern belt, stretching toward Solapur Road and Satara Road, has traditionally lagged behind the IT-heavy western and northern suburbs in terms of infrastructure attention. This approval changes that equation.

It's also worth noting the timing. This clearance came alongside a separate ₹17,725 crore approval for Mumbai's Metro Line 13 connecting Mira-Bhayander with Vasai-Virar, suggesting the state government is currently in an aggressive infrastructure-spending cycle across both the MMR and Pune Metropolitan Region. For a city that has struggled with traffic bottlenecks for over a decade, having the funding and land acquisition largely sorted is a meaningfully different starting point than previous ring road announcements.

That said, a Cabinet approval is not the same as a shovel-in-the-ground start date, and June 2029 is still roughly three years out. Homebuyers evaluating projects near this corridor should track actual construction milestones, not just the announcement, before pricing in the connectivity premium. Early movers who buy ahead of physical construction typically get better entry prices, but the flip side is that timelines on large infrastructure projects in India routinely slip.

For now, the ₹10,502 crore clearance is a clear statement of intent from the state government, and it puts Pune's eastern suburbs firmly on the radar for the next real estate growth cycle. Anyone tracking Pune real estate over the next three to five years would do well to watch how quickly ground-level work follows this approval.
