Swargate-Katraj Metro Line Gets the Green Light

South Pune just got a major infrastructure boost. The Union Cabinet has approved the Swargate to Katraj Underground Line Extension, popularly called the Line-1B extension, marking one of the most anticipated additions to the Pune Metro network. The project will extend the existing PCMC-Swargate corridor further south, adding a fully underground stretch that connects some of the city's busiest residential and commercial pockets.

The extension spans 5.46 km and was initially planned with three underground stations at Market Yard, Padmavati, and Katraj. Following strong public demand, the state government later approved two additional stations at Bibwewadi and Balaji Nagar, taking the total tally higher and pushing up the project cost, with the state agreeing to fund the extra amount needed for the added stations. The entire corridor, implemented by Maha-Metro, carries an estimated cost of Rs. 2,954.53 crore, with funding shared equally between the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and bilateral agencies. The target completion date is February 2029.

Connectivity is the biggest draw here. The new line will integrate directly with the Swargate Multimodal Hub, combining the metro station, the MSRTC bus stand, and the PMPML bus stand, creating a single seamless transit point for commuters entering or leaving the city. It will also link the southernmost parts of Pune to the northern, eastern, and western regions through the District Court interchange station, effectively placing Katraj and its neighbouring localities on the city's main metro grid for the first time.

On the ground, work has already begun. Construction activity kicked off with excavation at the busy Market Yard station, where authorities have started digging shafts to lower Tunnel Boring Machines into place. Four TBMs are expected to be deployed gradually over the coming months, with station construction and tunnelling proceeding simultaneously. Because the alignment is entirely underground, road traffic disruption is expected to be limited, though some temporary barricading has already been set up along Satara Road as work progresses.

For homebuyers and investors, this corridor is significant because it runs through some of Pune's most densely populated southern suburbs, including Bibwewadi, Balaji Nagar, Dhankawadi, and Padmavati, areas that have long depended on road transport alone. A direct underground metro connection typically triggers renewed buyer interest along the route, as commute times shrink and access to the city core via the District Court interchange becomes far more convenient.

This extension is part of a much larger vision. Maharashtra's Chief Minister has spoken of building out a 200-kilometre metro network across Pune in the coming years, with instructions already given to Maha Metro to prepare a comprehensive expansion plan. Alongside the Swargate-Katraj line, the Cabinet has separately approved other Phase-2 corridors, including the Vanaz-Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi-Wagholi stretches, and more recently Line 4 connecting Kharadi, Hadapsar, Swargate, and Khadakwasla. Ridership on the existing network is already strong, with the city seeing around 2.5 lakh daily commuters and even higher numbers during festive periods, underlining the growing shift toward metro-based mobility in Pune.
