Cabinet approves Wagholi-Kharadi metro link, putting East Pune on the fast track.
Explore NowEast Pune just got a major reason to celebrate. The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the Pune Metro Rail Project Phase-2: Vanaz to Chandani Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B), as extensions of the existing Vanaz–Ramwadi corridor under Phase-1. For young professionals and families eyeing homes in Wagholi and Kharadi, this isn't just infrastructure news, it's a direct upgrade to daily life and long-term property value.
Here's what's actually being built. These two elevated corridors will span 12.75 km and include 13 stations, connecting fast-developing suburbs such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. On the ground, the Wagholi side of this project is the bigger, more transformative piece. The Vanaz–Chandani Chowk stretch runs 1.12 km with 2 stations, while Ramwadi–Wagholi/Vitthalwadi covers 11.63 km with 11 stations, together forming the full 12.75 km, 13-station corridor. That means Wagholi residents will soon have a direct, elevated rail link straight into Pune's core metro network via Ramwadi.
Money matters too, and this project comes with serious backing. The estimated project cost is Rs. 3626.24 crore, to be equally shared by the Government of India, Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral/multilateral agencies. On timelines, officials are targeting a tight turnaround. The project is scheduled for completion within four years. Independent transit analysts, however, expect construction to realistically kick off only around 2026, with full opening more likely by 2029-2030 once tendering and land processes conclude, so buyers should treat the four-year figure as an official target rather than a guaranteed delivery date.
Why does this matter beyond just a train ride? It's about how Kharadi and Wagholi function as employment and residential hubs. This strategic proposal is a logical extension of the existing Corridor-2 and aligns with the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), which envisions a continuous Chandani Chowk to Wagholi Metro corridor to strengthen East–West mass transit in Pune. The corridor doesn't stop at Wagholi's edge either, it's designed to plug the whole city into a bigger network. The new corridors will also integrate at the District Court Interchange Station with Line-1 (Nigdi-Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadi-District Court) to enable seamless multimodal urban travel.
Commute pain points that Wagholi residents know all too well are squarely in the crosshairs. These extensions will also help decongest arterial routes such as Paud Road and Nagar Road, offering safe, fast, and eco-friendly mobility options. Anyone who's sat in Nagar Road traffic during peak IT-park hours knows exactly why this matters. There's also a bigger-picture connectivity play at work. Under long-term mobility planning, intercity bus services from cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru will be integrated at Chandani Chowk, while those from Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar will connect at Wagholi, allowing passengers to easily access Pune's Metro system.
Ridership projections back up the scale of ambition here. After completion of these corridors, the projected incremental daily ridership for the entire Line 2 is estimated at 0.96 lakh in 2027, 2.01 lakh in 2037, 2.87 lakh in 2047, and 3.49 lakh in 2057. On the ground level, work is already inching forward. Tenders for Ramwadi-Wagholi construction started in late 2025, with bids opening around January 2026, with work beginning in Q1 2026, split into phases of 4.8 km first, then 6.8 km.
For homebuyers and investors, the takeaway is simple: Kharadi and Wagholi are shifting from IT-hub adjacent suburbs to metro-connected residential destinations in their own right. Government press releases have flagged the broader intent clearly. These extensions will serve key IT hubs, commercial areas, educational institutions, and residential pockets, increasing the share of public transport and ridership across the network. Combined with Kharadi's IT parks, Wagholi's affordable-to-mid housing stock, and now a confirmed metro timeline, this corridor gives East Pune buyers a concrete infrastructure milestone to plan around, not just a promise on paper.
