Approved Kharadi-Hadapsar-Swargate-Khadakwasla metro corridor set to redefine East Pune connectivity.
Explore NowPune's eastern and southern suburbs are edging closer to a major public transport upgrade. The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved Line 4 (Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla) and its spur Line 4A (Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug) under Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project on 26 November 2025, marking the second major Phase-2 sanction after the Vanaz–Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi–Wagholi lines. Together, the two corridors span 31.636 km with 28 elevated stations, connecting IT hubs, commercial zones, educational institutions, and residential clusters across East, South, and West Pune.
The project carries an estimated cost of Rs 9,857.85 crore, to be jointly funded by the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral or multilateral funding agencies, with a five-year construction timeline from the date of approval. Following the Centre's clearance, the Maharashtra government issued a revised administrative approval on 17 February 2026 via a Government Resolution authorising a Memorandum of Understanding between the state, the Union government, and Maha Metro, which will execute the project. Under the funding structure, both the Union and state governments will contribute Rs 1,212 crore each, with the balance met through loans and other sources.
For Hadapsar and Kharadi residents, the biggest draw is the interchange planned at Hadapsar Railway Station, which will also connect with future corridors towards Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road, ensuring multimodal connectivity across metro, rail, and bus networks. In fact, the state separately cleared two additional spur lines — Hadapsar to Loni Kalbhor and Hadapsar to Saswad Road — covering about 16 km and 14 elevated stations, reinforcing Hadapsar's emergence as a key transit node in the city's east.
The corridor threads through some of Pune's busiest arterial stretches, including Solapur Road, Magarpatta Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, and the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway, and is expected to meaningfully ease congestion on these routes while improving safety and encouraging a shift towards greener commuting. Officials note that the Kharadi–Khadakwasla stretch, linking the IT corridor with the southwestern residential belt, is projected to carry the highest ridership on the line, effectively becoming Pune's first continuous east-west and southwest rapid transit spine.
Ridership projections underline the scale of demand this corridor is expected to serve: daily ridership on Line 4 and 4A combined is expected to be 4.09 lakh in 2028, rising to nearly 7 lakh by 2038. On the ground, momentum is visible — MLA Bhimrao Tapkir recently walked the proposed alignment with Maha-Metro Managing Director Shravan Hardikar and senior officials, inspecting station locations and neighbourhood nodes such as the Khadakwasla Gaothan area. Maha Metro is currently finalising station locations, ramp designs, and minor alignment adjustments, with the tendering process for construction agencies likely to begin in the coming months.
For homebuyers evaluating East Pune, this update matters beyond headlines. Kharadi already anchors one of the city's largest IT employment clusters, while Hadapsar's mix of established townships and ongoing redevelopment has kept it on buyer radars for years. A confirmed, funded metro line — rather than a proposal on paper — tends to shift buyer sentiment meaningfully, as it de-risks the long-term commute and infrastructure story for a locality. With cost breakups already worked out (Rs 1,694 crore for alignment and formation works, Rs 1,300 crore for stations, and about Rs 890 crore for traction, power, and signalling), the project has moved well past the conceptual stage.
As Pune's metro network is set to extend beyond 100 km with this approval, developers with a presence in the city are watching the Hadapsar-Kharadi belt closely. Smart World, known for its master-planned residential developments in Gurugram, has signalled plans to expand its footprint to cities including Pune, and infrastructure catalysts like this metro corridor are exactly the kind of long-term connectivity story that shapes where such developments get planned next.
