Game-Changing Infrastructure: MMRDA's JVLR Flyover Nears Major Milestone

Mumbai's first flyover integrated with a metro corridor is set to be commissioned in phases, with the first stretch from Infinity Mall in Andheri West to JVLR Junction targeted for completion by December 2026 and the remaining section up to Poonam Nagar expected to be ready by May 2027. This landmark project, part of MMRDA's "Mumbai in Minutes" initiative, is transforming east-west mobility across the city's bustling western suburbs.

The 5.08-km flyover, proposed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), will connect New Link Road near Infinity Mall, Andheri West, with Poonam Nagar on the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR). Of the total length, 0.93 km has already been constructed by the BMC. As the proposed flyover alignment overlaps with Metro Line 6, the BMC entrusted the remaining construction to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

The project's engineering is cutting-edge. The 2.58-km first portion is being constructed as a double-decker structure along with Metro Line 6 and has achieved 80% physical progress. The second portion, spanning 1.58 km, is being built as a single-level flyover and ramps and includes a 120-metre cable-stayed bridge crossing the Western Express Highway and operational Metro Line 7. MMRDA has achieved a major milestone on the Andheri–JVLR Missing Link by launching a 52-metre steel span at the busy Infinity Mall junction. Executed in a highly constrained transit zone between Metro Lines 2A and 6, the operation marks a crucial step toward easing east–west travel and cutting congestion across Andheri and JVLR in the coming months.

The congestion problem is acute. At present, commuters from Lokhandwala, Oshiwara, Four Bungalows and Seven Bungalows towards JVLR face intense congestion. Major bottlenecks are seen at Veera Desai Road and Captain Suresh Samant Marg leading to Jogeshwari SV Road. During peak hours, the 3.7 km stretch between Swami Samarth Nagar Lokhandwala Circle and the Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma Centre on the Western Express Highway can take 30 to 45 minutes.

The benefits are transformative. According to the MMRDA, this flyover will offer direct, signal-free connectivity between Andheri and Powai, acting as a vital east-west corridor. It will reduce congestion on JVLR and the Western Express Highway, cut travel time, and lower fuel consumption and emissions. Metro Line-6 stands as a sustainable mobility solution expected to help commuters save 30–45 minutes in travel time.

The project is progressing despite challenges. The project has seen delays due to limited working hours on JVLR, the need to maintain traffic during construction, coordination with Metro Line 7 operations, shifting utilities and removing encroachments at Veera Desai junction and Pratap Nagar. Yet MMRDA officials told mid-day that work on the arterial east-west connector is on schedule. For homebuyers and property investors in Andheri, Powai, Jogeshwari, and Lokhandwala, this infrastructure upgrade signals stronger connectivity, reduced commute friction, and enhanced property appreciation potential in the region's fastest-developing neighborhoods.

Quick Answers

When will the JVLR flyover Phase 1 open?
The first stretch from Infinity Mall in Andheri West to JVLR Junction is targeted for completion by December 2026 and the remaining section up to Poonam Nagar expected to be ready by May 2027.
What is the length of the complete JVLR flyover project?
The 5.08-km flyover will connect New Link Road near Infinity Mall, Andheri West, with Poonam Nagar on the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR).
How is this flyover different from regular flyovers?
The project is being executed in two parts, including a double-decker stretch carrying both the flyover and Metro 6. This integrated design optimizes space and provides dual-transport benefits.
Which areas will benefit most from this flyover?
Commuters from Lokhandwala, Oshiwara, Four Bungalows and Seven Bungalows towards JVLR will benefit most. Major bottlenecks at Veera Desai Road and Captain Suresh Samant Marg leading to Jogeshwari SV Road will be eased.
How much time can commuters save?
Metro Line-6 is expected to help commuters save 30–45 minutes in travel time. Current peak-hour trips that take 30-45 minutes will be significantly reduced.
What is the current construction progress?
The 2.58-km first portion is being constructed as a double-decker structure along with Metro Line 6 and has achieved 80% physical progress. The second section has recorded 58.41% progress.
Why did MMRDA take over the project from BMC?
As the proposed flyover alignment overlaps with Metro Line 6, the BMC entrusted the remaining construction to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
Will this flyover reduce traffic on the Western Express Highway?
The flyover will offer direct, signal-free connectivity between Andheri and Powai, acting as a vital east-west corridor. It will reduce congestion on JVLR and the Western Express Highway, cut travel time, and lower fuel consumption and emissions.
What are the main challenges delaying the project?
The project has seen delays due to limited working hours on JVLR, the need to maintain traffic during construction, coordination with Metro Line 7 operations, shifting utilities and removing encroachments at Veera Desai junction and Pratap Nagar.
How will this impact property values in surrounding areas?
Improved east-west connectivity, signal-free travel, and reduced commute times typically strengthen property appreciation in well-connected neighborhoods like Andheri, Lokhandwala, Powai, and Jogeshwari.
