Gurugram Metro Phase 1: Construction In Full Swing

Gurugram's long-awaited metro corridor has moved decisively from paperwork to pillars. After years of tendering delays, on-ground construction of Phase 1 began in earnest, with engineers driving piles into the ground at Sector 44 and progressing along the alignment. The new metro line project in Gurgaon entered its on-ground construction stage as engineers began laying working piles at Sector 44, with GMRL teams initiating the piling activity that will form the base for the upcoming metro piers. The joint venture executing the flagship package is well known in the infrastructure space: the flagship CC-01 package, from Millennium City Centre to Sector 9 with 14 stations and 15.22 km long, is being executed by Dilip Buildcon Ltd. in a joint venture with Ranjit Buildcon Pvt. Ltd., a team recognised for high-volume infrastructure expertise.

The pace of work has been notable. The piling rig, capable of drilling up to 180 metres deep, was brought to site overnight, with a senior GMRL official noting it would proceed toward Subhash Chowk and Hero Honda Chowk, eventually reaching Sector 9. Contractors have emphasised speed without cutting corners on engineering standards. Each pile, designed to support the elevated corridor, will be 28 metres deep and one metre in diameter, with four piles constructed after every 28 metres to support the pillar on which the track will be built. A senior Dilip Buildcon official candidly acknowledged the ground realities of working in a dense urban corridor: piling operations are progressing steadily despite challenging site conditions.

By early 2026, the scale of the effort had become visible across the city's arterial roads. Over 900 pillars are being cast on the 15.2 km first phase from Millennium City Centre to Sector 9, with Phase 2 tenders for the Cyber City half opening in 2026. Foundation work has also fanned out to multiple points along the route rather than staying confined to one starting stretch. Phase 1 civil works progressed, with more than 900 pillars being cast between Millennium City Centre and Sector 9, and foundation work visible at Sector 45 and Subhash Chowk.

Official statements from GMRL leadership reflect confidence in the delivery timeline despite the project's earlier delays. The first phase, estimated at Rs 1,277 crore, carries a targeted completion year of 2028, with managing director Chandra Shekhar Khare noting, "We intend to take up construction in an expedited manner." The corridor itself is more than a standalone line — it is designed to plug directly into the existing Delhi Metro network. The Gurugram Metro Phase 1 corridor will connect key residential, business, and industrial sectors of the city, improving last-mile connectivity, decongesting arterial roads, and providing seamless metro integration with Delhi via the Millennium City Centre interchange.

Work has also begun spreading to the terminal end of the line near Millennium City Centre itself, where GMRL has started preparatory activity for station integration. GMRL has commenced preparatory work at the Millennium City Centre, asserting that the station will significantly boost regional connectivity by connecting several other key stations, including Golf Course Road, Subhash Chowk, and Signature Chowk. To keep the city moving during construction, authorities have been coordinating closely with traffic police. A traffic management plan is being discussed with the traffic police and other civic bodies to minimise inconveniences, with phased work schedules expected to reduce trouble, though commuters are likely to face issues during peak hours.

For homebuyers watching the corridor, the metro's progress is already showing up in property trends along Old Gurugram and the Dwarka Expressway. Real estate experts report that property values in Old Gurgaon (Sectors 4, 7, and 9) and near the Dwarka Expressway have already appreciated by 15-20%, with rental demand expected to rise by another 10% once trial runs begin. Meanwhile, planning for the second half of the loop is already underway in parallel. Phase 2 (Sector 9 to Cyber City) went to tender in early 2026, with GMRL having submitted a roughly Rs 2,800 crore World Bank loan proposal covering about 60 percent of that phase's cost. With piling, pillar casting, and precast segment work now running concurrently across multiple sites, the Millennium City Centre-Sector 9 stretch is emerging as one of the most closely watched infrastructure projects for Gurugram's residential corridors in 2026.
