Delhi-Jewar Airport Rail Link: UP Government Clears 21-Minute RRTS Corridor
NCR's connectivity map just got a serious upgrade. The Uttar Pradesh government has approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a proposed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor connecting Delhi with the upcoming Noida International Airport at Jewar, expected to significantly improve connectivity and reduce travel time between Delhi and the airport to nearly 21 minutes. For context, the proposed corridor could reduce travel time between Delhi and the airport to just 21 minutes — a dramatic improvement compared to current road travel durations that can often stretch beyond 90 minutes during peak traffic hours.
The move came after Uttar Pradesh Industrial Development Minister Nand Gopal Gupta said the detailed project report (DPR) for the Delhi–Jewar RRTS link had been cleared by the state government and sent to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. This means the plan still needs central government sign-off before construction can begin, but the state-level approval is a major milestone. Following approval from the state cabinet, the DPR has now been sent to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) for final clearance from the Centre.
On the technical side, the corridor is designed to match the standards of India's first operational rapid rail line. The proposed Delhi–Jewar Airport RRTS corridor is expected to function on the lines of the Namo Bharat rapid rail system currently operating on the Delhi-Meerut route, with trains designed for top speeds of up to 180 kmph and a maximum operating speed of 160 kmph. As a reference point, the existing 82.15-km route connects Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi with Modipuram in Uttar Pradesh and serves as the country's first example of regional high-speed urban transit.
The proposed alignment is expected to run through some of NCR's busiest growth corridors. The corridor is planned to originate at Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi and pass through DND Flyway, Noida City Centre, NSEZ, Surajpur, Pari Chowk, Ecotech and YEIDA sectors before terminating at Noida International Airport. Officials indicate key stations along the alignment could include Siddharth Vihar, Greater Noida West, Knowledge Park V, Surajpur, Pari Chowk, Ecotech VI, Dankaur, YEIDA Sector 18, YEIDA Sector 21 and Noida International Airport, with the corridor expected to have between 11 and 12 major RRTS stations in total.
What makes this corridor especially significant for future travellers is its planned integration with an even bigger rail project. According to Uttar Pradesh Industrial Development Minister Nand Gopal Gupta, the DPR has also proposed integrating the Delhi-Jewar RRTS with the upcoming Delhi-Varanasi high-speed rail project through a dedicated station at the airport terminal, a move that could create an integrated transport network linking air travel with high-speed rail infrastructure. The corridor is also expected to link with existing metro networks: integration with the Delhi Metro Blue Line and the Noida Metro Aqua Line is part of the plan, enabling seamless interchange between different transit systems.
Timing matters here too. The development comes as Noida International Airport prepares for flight operations, which are expected to commence on June 15, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the airport project on March 28 earlier this year. With commercial flights beginning around the same window, demand for fast, reliable airport access from central Delhi is set to grow quickly.
It's worth noting the project is still in the approval pipeline rather than under construction. While the project has received key planning approvals, the construction timeline and phased operational schedule are still being finalised, with development expected to proceed in stages, aligned with the growth of the Noida Airport and the YEIDA area. Experts see the broader benefit extending well beyond flyers. Experts believe the project could also reduce dependence on private vehicles and taxis for airport travel, helping lower traffic pressure on key NCR roads and expressways.
