31.6 km, 28 stations, one corridor set to redraw Pune's east-south commute map.
Explore NowPune's public transport story just got its biggest upgrade since Phase 1 opened. The Union Cabinet has approved Metro Line 4, running from Kharadi to Khadakwasla via Hadapsar and Swargate, along with its spur Line 4A connecting Nal Stop, Warje and Manik Baug. Covering 31.636 km with 28 elevated stations, this marks the second major project under Phase-2 of Pune Metro. The project will be completed within five years at a cost of ₹9,857.85 crore, jointly funded by the central and state governments and multilateral agencies.
Broken down, the two corridors work like this: a 25.8-km route from Khadakwasla to Kharadi through Hadapsar and Swargate, with 22 stations, costing Rs 8,131 crore; and a 6-km route from Manik Baug to Nal Stop via Warje, with six stations, costing Rs 1,765 crore. For daily commuters in Kharadi's IT belt or Hadapsar's industrial pockets, this means a direct rail link into the heart of the city for the first time, instead of relying solely on choked arterial roads.
Connectivity is really the headline story here. These lines are a vital part of Pune's Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) and will seamlessly integrate with operational and sanctioned corridors at Kharadi Bypass & Nal Stop (Line 2), and Swargate(Line 1). They will also provide an interchange at Hadapsar Railway Station and connect with future corridors towards Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road, ensuring smooth multimodal connectivity across metro, rail, and bus networks. In effect, Hadapsar is being positioned as a genuine multi-line junction rather than a single stop bolted onto someone else's route, with three dedicated stations planned inside Magarpatta City alone, since Line 4 gives Magarpatta City three stations of its own, Magarpatta South, Magarpatta Main, and Magarpatta North, reflecting just how large that township has grown.
Commuters currently stuck in traffic on the city's busiest stretches stand to gain the most. Traversing Solapur Road, Magarpatta Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, and the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway, the project will ease congestion on Pune's busiest routes while improving safety and promoting green, sustainable mobility. These are roads that see some of the heaviest peak-hour bottlenecks in the city, so a parallel elevated rail option changes the daily math for thousands of office-goers and students.
The ridership numbers back up the scale of ambition. According to projections, the daily ridership on Line 4 and 4A combined is expected to be 4.09 lakh in 2028, rising to nearly 7 lakh in 2038, 9.63 lakh in 2048, and Of this, the Kharadi–Khadakwasla corridor will account for 3.23 lakh passengers in 2028, growing to 9.33 lakh by 2058, while the Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug spur line will rise from 85,555 to 2.41 lakh passengers over the same period. That kind of growth curve signals a corridor built for decades, not just the next election cycle.
On the ground, work is already moving. The newly approved elevated corridor under Pune Metro Phase-2 was recently inspected on the ground by MLA Shri Bhimrao Tapkir together with senior Maha-Metro officials, joined by Maha-Metro Managing Director Shri Shravan Hardikar, walking through the newly approved Khadakwasla–Kharadi Metro corridor, checking proposed station locations, the planned alignment and surrounding neighbourhoods. The project will be implemented by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), which will carry out all civil, electrical, mechanical, and systems works, and pre-construction activities such as topographical surveys and detailed design consultancy are already underway.
What does this mean if you're house-hunting along this belt? Experts tracking the corridor see impact well beyond travel time. Better access to job hubs is expected to support employment patterns, while improved connections along the corridor can lift real estate demand and tourism potential in key zones. Kharadi in particular already commands strong buyer interest thanks to its IT ecosystem; EON IT Park, spanning approximately 5 million square feet across multiple towers on Kharadi Bypass Road, houses global tenants including Citibank, Wipro, Cognizant, and numerous mid-sized technology firms, employing an estimated 60,000–70,000 professionals — a workforce that a direct metro link only makes easier to serve. Historically, metro connectivity has driven 10–18% property price appreciation in a 500m–1km catchment zone in Indian cities, a pattern homebuyers evaluating projects near the upcoming stations would do well to watch closely.
For Pune's homebuyers, the takeaway is straightforward: a corridor once dependent on slow, congested surface roads is being wired into the city's rapid transit backbone. Whether you work out of Kharadi's tech parks, Hadapsar's industrial units, or commute daily into central Pune via Swargate, Line 4 and 4A promise to shrink travel times and open up neighbourhoods that were previously considered too far from the action. As construction milestones roll out over the coming years, expect interest — and pricing conversations — around these stations to only intensify.
